VOILA – JE CRITIQUE!
A Movement for Change - Songs of Protest
GEN Z 261 represents Madagascar's youth-led movement, with 261 being the country's international dialling code.
Beginning in mid-September 2025, Madagascar witnessed an unprecedented wave of civic action sparked by persistent infrastructure failures—frequent blackouts and water supply disruptions—alongside allegations of government corruption. Young activists and students coordinated primarily through social media platforms, organizing demonstrations that quickly spread beyond the capital.
This grassroots mobilization stands apart from traditional political movements in Madagascar. Rather than following established political structures or prominent leaders, participants organized autonomously through digital networks. The movement's strength lies in its leaderless, decentralized approach, with young Malagasy citizens emphasizing peaceful civic engagement as their core principle.
Dazz-B MusiQ is the artistic identity of Obakeng Kekana, a multi-instrumentalist and composer from Soshanguve, the Pretoria township that has been instrumental in shaping South African music, including the Amapiano genre. His sound bridges South African traditional music with Mali Blues, drawing inspiration across the African continent.
Working with the M2KR label, Obakeng has produced remixes featuring prominent South African artists including Busi Mhlongo, Mabi Gabriel Thobejane, Lungiswa, Robert Doc Mthalane, Madosini, and the renowned Madala Kunene. M2KR founder Robert Trunz recognized his abilities, noting Obakeng's exceptional production skills and talent for crafting rich sonic textures.
Through his collaboration with Madala Kunene, Obakeng discovered the Malagasy group Sa Roy, an acappella trio from Tulear. The Trio, under the leadership of Soaraza Patrice Thomas (lead vocals, songwriting, dance, and multiple instruments) features Sambeto Eugene (baritone) and Ando Pra (harmony vocals) from Madagascar's Androy region.
Their musical approach combines acappella singing with mandolin, acoustic guitar, traditional percussion, and Tandroy dance traditions. The trio's album Pelakolo, produced by Matthias Abaecherli and featuring Madala Kunene, was recorded across Tulear and Durban, reflecting a cross-continental artistic exchange that began with Forest Jam sessions in Madagascar in 2015. The remix GEN Z 261 is based on Soaraza Patrice Thomas song ZARA MIRA from the album Pelakolo.
English Lyrics
I am an artist which is why I sing. It's irregular & unfair, that's why I criticise.
Nothing despises satisfaction. And that doesn't mean we're going to hold ourselves back or give up.
If we are human beings living in this world - we all feel pain & suffering.
Take inspiration from handicapped persons who succeed with support at their center.
Things are not fine, that's why I sing. It's irregular & unfair, that's why I criticise.
We humans are not animals. Make everyone who is small feel the pain.
Don't be like a big brother who shares quail meat with his brother: if it's not the head, then it's the legs.
The advantage reserved for everyone, you benefit from it alone without shame.
This is a criticism of selfishness - pointing out that some people take advantages meant for everyone and keep them for themselves without any shame. It's condemning greed and hoarding of resources.
So who can bear witness without difficulty? We are all alive to have and to possess.
Is it bad to have compassion?
(Rhetorical question: )
This way we're all happy & delighted
Remember - reading or being educated is not enough.
It's the one who helps others selflessly, without self-satisfaction.
Overall meaning: This section emphasizes that education without compassion is empty, calls for fair distribution of resources, reminds us we are all family, and asks rhetorically if compassion is wrong - suggesting that compassion makes everyone happy.
Remember - reading or being educated is not enough.
It's the one who helps others selflessly, without self-satisfaction.
Leave the extravagant - the unfair distribution. Let's do proper & fair distribution.
We humans are not animals. Make everyone who is small feel the pain.
And there you have it, this song is made for all of us.
We must help each other to succeed in life. Otherwise we risk falling down / hitting rock bottom. So there you have it - that's what I'm trying to tell you.
