Inspired by labels and artists across the modern house scene, Nicholas Jay focuses on creating music that connects with the dancefloor while maintaining a distinctive melodic and rhythmic identity. MABI GABRIEL THOBEJANE - VELORA THE REMIX
The late Mabi Gabriel Thobejane maintained a profound and enduring connection with Japan, where a dedicated nationwide audience recognised the depth of his work as a Malombo drummer and musical shaman. His music was never confined to genre — it operated as rhythm in its purest form: pulse, repetition and spiritual function.
Through his collaboration with Juno Reactor founder Ben Watkins, Mabi's percussive language entered a wider global framework. His influence can be traced within the sonic environments surrounding major productions such as The Matrix Reloaded and Mortal Kombat, where traditional rhythmic structures were reinterpreted within electronic and cinematic contexts.
MADIBA, recorded in Johannesburg in 1995, stands as his only solo album — a direct tribute to Nelson Mandela at a defining moment in South Africa's cultural and political reawakening. From this recording, the track "Shapedi" forms the foundation of the present remix by Nicholas Jay, bridging past and present through a contemporary Tech House lens.
The cover artwork draws deliberately on Japanese visual language, reflecting a parallel cultural philosophy. Three core elements define its structure: 鼓動 (Kodō – heartbeat) as the driving pulse, 精霊 (Seirei – spirit) as the ancestral force, and 儀式 (Gishiki – ritual) as the unifying principle.
