Trevor Mako, real name Dumisani Trevor Maseko, is an experienced multifaceted artist—singer, musician, bassist, guitarist, lyricist, sound engineer, music producer, and videographer. His soulful remix of “Ukuthula” from the late South African diva Busi Mhlongo’s groundbreaking album Urbanzulu was a standout piece chosen to resonate with contemporary audiences.

Nearly three decades later, in 2024, the lyrics of “Ukuthula” remain as relevant and poignant as ever amid increasing global conflicts that distract from critical issues like communal harmony and environmental stewardship. In the song, Busi Mhlongo poignantly laments the harsh realities of violence, unemployment, and poverty—a cycle that, regrettably, continues to affect societies back home and worldwide. Her words, “people can kill me if they find my money,” echo through the years, underscoring the persistent struggles against these enduring challenges.

Trevor Mako’s choice to remix Ukuthula highlights not only his deep connection to the music and its message but also his commitment to bringing historical awareness to a new generation, illustrating the power of music to bridge time and cultural divides.

Trevor Mako, a burgeoning talent, is joining a lineup of renowned South African remixers like Culoe de Song and Black Coffee. Alongside global artists such as Rocco Rodamaal, Frederic Galliano, and Mario Cee aka Nadbox, these figures played a pivotal role in bringing Mam’ Busi Mhlongo’s music to international dance floors. For over two decades, their collective efforts have helped to introduce and sustain Busi Mhlongo’s influential sound across clubs from Johannesburg to Ibiza to New York City, continuing to celebrate and amplify her legacy globally.
