Trevor Mako is an all-round artist – a multi-instrumentalist, singer, producer and videographer, who is no stranger to remixing the works of South African legends. Following his first successful remix for the M2KR label [being that of Busi Mhlongo's Ukuthula], Trevor embarked on another exploration of this iconic South African singer who wrote the lyrics to a sound track originally composed by Swiss guitarist Max Laesser. This time Trevor chose to re-interpret Busi's Lua Lua, but unlike with the previous rework of Ukuthula, here he realised that in exploring a possible direction for the song, it posed more of a challenge and took longer than he had foreseen. So, in contemplating a possible approach and while searching online for inspiration, he came across the track Colour of You, released in 2011 by the acclaimed singer, poet and actor, Kabomo. Encouraged by the depth of Kabomos message, Trevor was inspired to dive deeper and give a broader context to his interpretation of Lua. Lua, and ultimately he ended up inviting Kabomo to contribute a spoken-word piece to the track, resulting in two powerful versions. Trevor further explains how Busi Mhlongo was an Inyanga [traditional healer] with divine knowledge, and that the song is forever relevant, because there will always be a time when we call on bigger or divine entities to mediate with some of the things we are going through as human beings. Adding that with Lua Lua, Busi Mhlongo is actually calling to the moon which represents the womb, creativity and the feminine principle and that females are star-gates connecting one dimension to the other because they give birth to us. Although Busi didnt give a wider context or explain why she is calling to the moon, from Trevors understanding the moon represents all of the above, as well as intuition, subconscious, and overall connection with spirit! These two tracks offer an inspiring approach to the concept of remixing, and that in being open to exploring different treatments, Trevor Makos interpretations give the feel of a real-time, recorded collaboration with the late, great Busi Mhlongo. This EP pays tribute to a great track and honour a powerful artist!
