Pops Mohamed Legacy

2026-05-15

The original Pops Mohamed track "Never Again" returns on M2KR as a reconstruction, not a reinterpretation. The original by South African pianist and Ambassador of traditional music, Pops Mohamed addressed the violence of Soweto in 1976 and the wider township uprisings of the late '70s and '80s, including Gugulethu, through restraint and space rather than protest language.

The remix by Smadj works from the original material where possible. Smadj introduces the oud as a textural layer rather than a lead voice. It sits within the existing structure, extending tone and harmonic tension without shifting the emotional centre. The result is a dialogue between Southern African source material and a wider modal language, without forcing fusion.
The production sits in what can be described as an experimental ambient groove. Low-end architecture is extended for modern systems, while rhythm remains minimal and understated. There is no push toward a defined club format. Instead, the track holds a slow internal pulse that allows it to move across listening contexts.

This follows the M2KR approach: archive material is treated as a living source, not a fixed artefact. The role of the remix is to reposition, not to update or overwrite.

Within the catalogue, "Never Again (Smadj Remix)" sits alongside other MELT 2000 reconstructions where meaning carries more weight than format.

The track holds its original statement. It does not retell Soweto or Gugulethu. It keeps them present.
