OUD TO UBOMBO

In 1996, South African guitarist and traditional healer Madala Kunene released "Ubombo," a deeply spiritual track that would transcend cultural boundaries and inspire electronic reinterpretations across three decades. The song, rooted in Zulu folk tradition and acoustic blues, carries a profound message: telling the izangoma (diviners) and izanusi (traditional healers) that the ancestors are pleased.

This 2025 release presents three distinct versions of "Ubombo," each representing a different era and approach to electronic music interpretation, curated under the artistic vision of French-Tunisian oud master Smadj in collaboration with M2KR.

TRACK BREAKDOWN

1. UBOMBO (SMITH & MIGHTY REMIX) - 1997/2025

Re-release of the Historic Original

The journey of "Ubombo" into electronic realms began with Bristol's legendary duo Smith & Mighty, who recognized the raw potential within Kunene's intricate guitar work. Their groundbreaking 1997 Drum & Bass reinterpretation, originally featured on MELT2000's Music With No Name Vol. 1, became historic as both the inaugural remix of "Ubombo" and a bridge between South African musical heritage and the UK's thriving electronic scene.

This version played a crucial role in introducing Kunene's artistry to global electronic music enthusiasts. South African DJ and YFM Rudeboy Paul (Paul Mnisi) championed this remix during the mid-'90s, eventually creating his own reinterpretation under the moniker Azanian Pulse, further cementing "Ubombo's" status as a track that transcends genres and generations.

2. UBOMBO (SMADJ TECHNO VERSION) - 2025

New Interpretation by Smadj

Building upon three decades of cross-cultural musical exploration, Smadj delivers his own interpretation of Kunene's masterpiece through the lens of hypnotic Techno. This version transforms the original's acoustic guitar work into pulsating electronic textures while weaving in Smadj's signature oud melodies and maintaining deep respect for the track's spiritual undertones.

Drawing from his extensive collaboration history with artists like Talvin Singh, Ibrahim Maalouf, and Natacha Atlas, Smadj demonstrates his mastery of cultural translation through sound, creating a version that honors both the sacred source material and the dancefloor's transformative power.

3. UBOMBO (AMAPIANO VERSION) - 2025

Smadj featuring Dazz-B MusiQ

The most culturally resonant addition to the "Ubombo" catalog, this collaboration brings the track full circle by incorporating South Africa's most current electronic music movement. Working with producer Dazz-B Musiq (Obakeng Kekana), Smadj merges Tunisian oud traditions with Amapiano's distinctive rhythms, creating a version that connects the spiritual roots of the original with contemporary South African electronic innovation.

Dazz-B Musiq, who began his musical journey as a nine-year-old DJ and has already distinguished himself with remixes of Busi Mhlongo's iconic tracks, brings authentic South African electronic sensibility to the collaboration. His 2023 producer residency with M2KR in Durban, where he was introduced to legendary musicians like Madala Kunene, provided the perfect foundation for this ambitious project.
