Smadj

Jean-Pierre Smadja, known professionally as Smadj, is a French-Tunisian oud player, producer, and sound designer based in Paris. Over three decades, he has established himself as a master of blending traditional Middle Eastern and North African music with contemporary electronic production.

His debut solo album Equilibriste (1999) reached #4 on the European World Music Charts and established his reputation for combining acoustic and electronic elements. In 2002, he co-founded DuOuD with Mehdi Haddab, earning a BBC World Music Award nomination for their debut Wild Serenade. His extensive collaboration history includes work with Burhan Öçal, Talvin Singh, Ibrahim Maalouf, and Natacha Atlas, spanning film scores, multimedia projects, and large-scale musical productions across Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Smadj worked on ElectricMELT remix projects like SANSCAPES (Bushmen of The Kalahari)

Smadj's 2023 re-release of New Deal and renewed connections with M.E.L.T. 2000 artists led to this "Ubombo" project, representing a return to the collaborative spirit that has defined his career.

In 2025 SMADJ entered the world of M2KR with two remixes of Madala Kunene's track Ubombo.
