SHANA – SIMPLY HOT AND NATURALLY AFRICAN

SHANA — Simply Hot and Naturally Africa SHANA — short for Simply Hot and Naturally African — was one of South Africa’s most dynamic young vocal groups to emerge under the MELT 2000 banner in the late 1990s. Formed by Demor Sikhosana, Shota (Mnqobi Mdabe), and Black Coffee (Nkosinathi Maphumulo), the trio represented a new generation of post-apartheid musicians blending deep house, Afro-soul, and traditional Zulu influences with sophisticated global production. Busi Mhlongo introduced SHANA to Robert Trunz on one of his regular visits to Durban.

Their debut release on MELT 2000 / M.E.L.T. Music carried the subtitle Simply Hot and Naturally African.

The project introduced the world to a smoother, melodic side of South African house music rooted in township groove. Out of SHANA's member Black Coffee come one of the most refined and -popular sounds for international stages.

The MELT 2000 Connection

By the time SHANA joined the label, MELT 2000 had already established itself as a creative home for boundary-breaking African and world-music collaborations — from Madala Kunene’s Konko Man to Pops Mohamed’s How Far We Have Come and Deepak Ram’s Gathering Forces.
Robert Trunz recognised in SHANA the next wave — young artists who carried traditional awareness into a fresh, urban sound that reflected the energy of a new South Africa.

As Black Coffee later recalled in Forbes:

“Then SA pop queen Busi Mhlongo introduced us to famed Swiss producer and label owner of M.E.L.T. 2000, Robert Trunz. He signed us to his label in 1997. We went on to release four albums. For some reason, Robert really believed in my talent and gave me the opportunity to produce a record by myself.”

That belief marked a turning point for the young artist — giving him not just a recording platform but his first professional production opportunity. As Wikipedia also notes,
