Born in Cato Manor, Durban, in 1949, Madala Kunene—affectionately known as Bafo—began his musical journey at age seven, crafting makeshift guitars from oil tins and fish gut. After his family’s forced removal to KwaMashu, his passion only grew stronger. Kunene rose to prominence performing with icons like Busi Mhlongo and Doc Mthalane before launching his international career with the 1990 album Konko Man, produced by Sipho Gumede. Blending ancestral Zulu sounds with global influences, his music carries deep spiritual and healing energy. Over decades, he has collaborated with generations of musicians and inspired many through projects like Forest Jam. In recognition of his contribution to South African music, Kunene received an honorary doctorate from UKZN and the Gold Order of Ikhamanga in 2024.
