Greg Hunter — Sonic Alchemist of the MELT 2000 Universe
British producer, engineer, and sound designer Greg Hunter became one of the key creative bridges between MELT 2000’s African roots and the global ambient-electronic movement that shaped the late 1990s. Known for his cinematic depth and mastery of sonic texture, Hunter’s work spans continents — from Egypt to South Africa, from the London underground to international film soundtracks.

Greg Hunter first entered the MELT 2000 circle with the album Second Wave and through his collaboration with Egyptian composer and multi-instrumentalist Amir Abd-El-Magid, whose delicate kanun melodies and Arabic modes merged seamlessly with Hunter’s deep ambient dub and electronic design. Together they created Second Wave and Sout El Leil (Voice of the Night), released under the alias Fifth Sun on Electric MELT — a project that fused North African tonalities with modern studio production, bridging Cairo’s spiritual heritage and London’s experimental electronica.
Their partnership naturally extended into work with South African artist Pops Mohamed, culminating in the acclaimed album Lotus Blossom (MZA 006). Recorded in 1999 and released by MELT 2000, the album also featured Amir Abd-El-Magid and captured a meditative dialogue between African instruments, Middle Eastern strings, and immersive electronic soundscapes. It stands as one of the label’s most elegant examples of cross-cultural sonic architecture.
Hunter’s connection to the MELT 2000 family continued through a series of remixes and reinterpretations. He remixed Madosini’s “Uthando Luphelile” (featured on African Meltdown, 2001) and later produced “San Hunter (Greg Hunter Remix 2)” for Bushmen of the Kalahari, released on Blaq Spirit ElectricMELT 1996-2010, Vol. 4 (2023) — reaffirming his long-term role in evolving the label’s legacy for new generations.
Beyond MELT 2000, Greg Hunter is widely recognised for his groundbreaking work with Juno Reactor, contributing to their early sonic identity that later inspired parts of The Matrix soundtrack. His production work has also intersected with The Orb, Dubsahara, Youth, and Kaya Project, always pushing boundaries between organic tradition and digital futurism.
