Charlie Mariano — The B&W Music Years

Few saxophonists have travelled as far, musically and spiritually, as Charlie Mariano. Born in Boston in 1923 to Italian parents, Mariano came of age in the bebop era and soon stood out among the new generation of alto players inspired by Charlie Parker. Yet his journey led him far beyond the boundaries of American jazz. After early acclaim with Stan Kenton’s orchestra and recordings with Charles Mingus, he began exploring the deeper connections between jazz and world traditions. His studies of South Indian classical music and the nadaswaram wind instrument shaped a singular voice that would later resonate across Europe and Asia.

By the early 1990s, long settled in Germany and revered as a “wanderer between musical worlds”, Mariano recorded a reflective quartet session titled Warum Bist Du Traurig (“Why Are You Sad”). At the time, the album remained unreleased — until fate brought it to the attention of Robert Trunz, founder of B&W Music, the label that would soon evolve into MELT 2000.

Robert Trunz, who was already known for his deep appreciation of sonic craftsmanship and adventurous jazz, had long admired Mariano’s lyrical tone and emotive phrasing. On hearing the unreleased material, he was struck by its understated brilliance. A buy-out agreement was arranged, and Warum Bist Du Traurig found its home on B&W Music, marking one of the label’s first artist signings before its transformation into MELT 2000 — the platform that would later redefine world-jazz collaboration from South Africa to Cuba and Brazil.

For Robert, releasing Mariano’s work was both an honour and a statement of intent: that B&W Music was not merely an audiophile label, but a space for musical truth, emotion, and cross-cultural depth. For Mariano, it was a graceful reaffirmation of his lifelong pursuit of beauty through tone — a sound at once worldly and deeply personal.
