Pops Mohamed – A devoted guardian of Africa’s musical heritage
Pops Mohamed’s music is beautifully expansive — he blended indigenous sounds with folk, jazz, and electronic textures, always with a sense of healing at its core. His work carries an ancient spirit, vibrant, alive and shaped by his gift for storytelling and his deep connection to tradition. Whether playing kora, thumb piano, or shaker, his sounds continue to invite listeners into rich, unfolding musical worlds.

Pops was also a devoted guardian of Africa’s musical heritage. Long before it drew wider recognition, Pops was learning from elders, reviving endangered instruments, and encouraging younger artists to embrace their roots. In doing so, he became a vital bridge between generations, keeping cultural memory alive.
Above all, Pops will be remembered for his spirit — warm, generous, curious, and full of humour. He shared openly, uplifted effortlessly, and touched people far beyond the stage. To many, he was not just a musician but a mentor and a healer, and his legacy continues to resonate through the lives and music he shaped.

The Dream Spirit
Pops’ Mohamed’s song, ‘The Spirit’ was originally released on his 1997 album ‘How Far Have We Come’
Following the news of Pops’ passing (on 05 December 2025), we felt moved to do a tribute remix of this special composition. It has been a longtime favorite track of the MELT2000 label director, Robert Trunz and myself, NickyB (host of ‘The World Show’ on Kaya959).
Working jointly with a highly talented young ( 24 year old) producer, Obakeng Kekana aka DAZZ-B Muziq we hoped to extend the legacy of this great artist with a contemporary rework of this timeless track.
At some point during production, Obakeng insisted/ suggested that the track needed some live elements, so it made sense to invite two legendary musicians who had worked closely with Pops. Without hesitation, the ‘King of Zulu Guitar’, Madala Kunene and the profound bassist Bernard Mndaweni arrived to add their musical magic, honoring and extending the legacy of our beloved friend, Pops Mohamed.
