Black Motion

Black Motion

Black Motion is one of South Africa's most celebrated Afro-house institutions, renowned for blending indigenous African percussion, live instrumentation and electronic dance music into a globally recognised sound. Formed in 2010 in Soshanguve, Pretoria, the group was founded by MÖRDA and Thabo Mabogwane.

In 2010, Black Motion signed with Faimos Entertainment and released their debut single, Banane Mavoko featuring Jah Rich, introducing their distinctive sound to audiences across South Africa and beyond.

Their debut album, Talking to the Drums, followed in 2011 and established Black Motion as pioneers of Afro-house. They continued to build momentum with Aquarian Drums (2012), before releasing their critically acclaimed third studio album, Fortune Teller, in 2014. The album was certified Gold by RiSA and won Best Dance Album at the 21st South African Music Awards.

In 2016, Black Motion signed a major recording agreement with Sony Music and released Ya Badimo. The album became one of the defining Afro-house projects of the decade, achieving Platinum certification and winning Best Dance Album at the 23rd South African Music Awards.

That same period also marked an important connection with the MELT 2000 musical family through uGayo, featuring Madala Kunene and Mabi Thobejane, bringing together Black Motion's contemporary Afro-house approach with two of South Africa's most revered traditional musicians.

In 2017, Black Motion partnered with Ballantine's Scotch Whisky on the Beat of Africa campaign, expanding their international profile and taking their signature live Afro-house experience to new audiences.

The years that followed delivered some of the group's most successful releases, including Joy Joy featuring Brenden Praise, Everything featuring Afrotraction and Mo-T, Uwrongo alongside Prince Kaybee, Shimza and Ami Faku, and Don't Let Me Go featuring Djeff, Malehloka and Miss P.

Their fifth studio album, Moya Wa Taola (2018), received a nomination for Album of the Year while winning Best Dance Album and Duo/Group of the Year at the 25th South African Music Awards.

In 2020, Black Motion released The Healers: The Last Chapter, celebrating ten years of musical excellence. Featuring artists including Nokwazi, Ami Faku, Simmy, Sauti Sol, Sun-El Musician, TRESOR, Msaki and Kabza De Small, the album won Best Dance Album at the 27th South African Music Awards and was further celebrated through the Red Bull Rendezvous concert in Graskop, Mpumalanga.

A New Chapter

In 2022, MÖRDA embarked on a solo career while co-founder Thabo Mabogwane continued the Black Motion journey alongside producer and musician Kabelo "Problem Child Ten83" Koma. The renewed partnership introduced its first release, Ngoma, featuring Dr Moruti, Osaze and Mazet SA.

This new chapter culminated in Rebirth of the Drum (2023), an album symbolising continuity, renewal and Black Motion's enduring commitment to African rhythmic traditions. Among its standout moments was Abangoma (Cave Mix), a reinterpretation of the Madala Kunene composition featuring Busi Mhlongo, Mabi Gabriel Thobejane and Tu Nokwe, further strengthening the group's connection to the MELT 2000 legacy.

Later that year, Black Motion collaborated with M2KR on Abangoma (North London Mix), a reimagined version developed from the original Black Motion production for release on Madala Kunene – 2023 Remixes Reel One, extending the dialogue between Afro-house and the archive recordings that helped shape South Africa's contemporary music landscape.

In 2024, Black Motion reunited musically with former member MÖRDA on Takala, alongside Afrikan Roots and DJ Buckz, a collaboration warmly received by audiences as a celebration of shared history, friendship and musical brotherhood.

The same year saw the release of The Cradle of Art, an expansive body of work exploring African identity, ancestral rhythms, live instrumentation and contemporary Afro-house production.

Black Motion and M2KR

Black Motion's relationship with M2KR reflects a shared commitment to preserving and reimagining South Africa's musical heritage for contemporary audiences.

Their M2KR journey began with uGayo and evolved through Abangoma (Cave Mix), Abangoma (North London Mix) and DBN Flight 389, a collaboration with Osaze and Spice Drums inspired by the enduring musical legacy of Busi Mhlongo and the wider MELT 2000 catalogue.

In 2026, Black Motion returns to the M2KR universe with Webaba (Black Motion Remix), forming part of GIANTS OF WEBABA, a curated compilation celebrating the lasting impact of We Baba Omncane, one of Busi Mhlongo's most celebrated songs from Urbanzulu.

Inspired by the seminal 2010 remixes by Black Coffee and Culoe De Song, GIANTS OF WEBABA assembles new and reworked interpretations by Black Motion, Blaq Soul, Dazz-B MusiQ and Italian producer AVG, known for his work alongside Mario Cee and the BADBOX movement.
