About Album
2018 ex Malombo and Sakhile drummer Mabi Gabriel Thobejane and the King of the Zulu guitar Madala Kunene – two legends of South African musical history – celebrated 50 years of sharing a stage and lasting friendship by touring South Africa. True to their roles as not just custodians but mentors for a generations of young musicians they featured Paki Peloeole Kgosietsile on drums and Swiss bass- and violin player Matthias to support Mabi’s legendary Malombo style of drumming. Lerato Lichaba on electric perfectly complimented Madala Kunene’s acoustic playing. Throughout the tour special guests Kanada Naharati on sitar, Themba Mokoena on electric guitar and Ngwako Manema on xylophone joined the group for a couple of concerts. As there wasn’t enough budget to record the performances properly Forest Jam producer Robert Trunz in Durban asked sound- and mastering engineer Chris Lewis in London to perform magic and painstakingly retrieve camera and Zoom audio recordings to preserve this historic Bootleg Tapes album. This time consuming project was only possible because of the 6 months of lockdown in 2020 during the Covid 19 pandemic. Stay safe and healthy !
