The late South African Diva Busi Mhlongo’s audience would often referred to of having never previously experienced anything like her live sets. They would go as far as calling it a divine experience, of being transported to pasts and futures and to other realms. Journalist Niron Tolsi of SA’s presigious Mail & Guardian called her humour impish and flirty; her rages uncontrollable. He called her “A punk diva, but the guardian of an ancient Zulu culture in modern times. A fashion icon. A fucking genius.”
More than a decade after leaving the stage, succumbing to breast cancer, Busi left us a legacy with a small but powerful catalogue of recordings. She topped charts in the late 90’s with her ground breaking album URBANZULU which remains one of the most popular South African recordings of the 90’s.
More than a decade later the label M2KR is picking up the URBANZULU legacy with a new remix project following the early successes of DJ’s like Culoe De Song, Soul II Soul and Black Coffee who put her name of the Club map from Ibiza to New York.
2024 is the year of Busi Mhlongo Remix Sequences and as a taster of what’s to come we are starting off with a remix by Ivan Curtis, a Music Producer from South Africa with a passion for indigenous elements. Ivan is an artist who transcends stylistic limitations of a genre so very few can. He is purveyor of African, infectious dance grooves and a feel-good atmosphere.
